Moving Checklist
Six Weeks Before Moving
Identify personal property not to be moved for charitable donation or garage sale. Arrange for pickup by charity.
Obtain estimates from several nationally recognized moving and transfer companies. Confirm approximate moving date.
Contact insurance agents regarding any changes necessitated by your move.
Four Weeks Before Moving
Obtain medical, dental and veterinary records on all family members. Update all prescriptions.
Obtain children's school records.
Notify all magazines and subscriptions of change of address
Confirm with current utility companies and other services dates you want service discontinued.
Contact utilities in new community to arrange for start of service.
Clean clothing and rugs and pack in protective wrapping for moving.
Check freezer and plan use of food over the next two to three weeks.
Service automobiles, power mowers, snowmobiles, boats and appliances that are to be moved. Check with moving company on requirements to drain fuels and lubricants.
If you are driving to your new home make sure your car is serviced and in good condition for your trip.
Reserve elevator if moving from or to a high rise condominium.
Arrange for cleaning of current home after move out.
Two Weeks Before Moving
Arrange for closing/transferring bank accounts and wiring of funds to new bank.
Complete Post Office change of address forms and submit to Postmaster.
Arrange for any special help needed on moving day (child care, pet care).
Collect valuables from safe-deposit box and arrange for safe transfer to new location.
Check with your insurance agent to make sure you will be covered through your homeowner's or renter's policy during the move.
Give a close friend or relative your moving and travel itinerary so you may be reached if needed.
Make arrangements to move plants you are taking with you and to give away plants which are not being moved.
Reconfirm all arrangement with your moving company.
One Week Before Moving
Cancel newspaper, lawn service, pest control and any other regularly scheduled services.
Check and make inventory of all furniture, noting any dents or scratches.
Make sure that all warranties and operating manuals which are being left for the new owners of your current home are set aside in a special place, so they will not be packed.
One Day Before Moving
Gas up all vehicles you will be driving
Call to reconfirm when packers/movers will arrive.
It's a nice idea to have drinks and snacks available for the movers.
On Moving Day
Plan to spend the entire day at the house. A decision maker needs to always be present. Don't leave until the movers have finished.
Double check closets, drawers, shelves, attic, garage, basement and storage buildings to make sure all personal property has been removed.
Tell packers/movers about any items of special concern.
Confirm with driver to make sure moving company records show the correct delivery address for your new home.
Give drivers your phone numbers.
Get routing and contact information from the moving company driver.
Before leaving secure the house, locking all doors and windows. Advise your Realtor and neighbors the house is empty.
